Back to Painting

It's been a while, but I am finally back to painting. I decided to start some studies in watercolor before I get back into oils. This is a 9"x12" watercolor painting of a photo from The Sartorialist. I'm so excited to get back into painting- more to come!

Frida Kahlo Drawing

Cinco de Mayo- Frida Kahlo Inspiration

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! This has to be my favorite in this issue of Vogue Japan. I am in love with the styling that is totally inspired by the legendary painter Frida Kahlo. The patterns and colors in these photos are a very beautiful update of traditional Mexican prints. Frida Kahlo was known not only for her paintings, but also for her unique fashion choices. She dressed in traditional Mexican clothing because her heritage was very important to her. The gorgeous photography was done by Giampolo Sgura and the styling was done by Anna Dello Russo. Nice homage to Frida and to Mexico, salud!

Pattern of the Day: Summer Cheer

Happy Monday everyone! Today's pattern of the day is Summer Cheer. This summer brings new inspiration, new beginnings, and renewed happiness. I am working on this pattern for my new summer collection, which I am very excited about! I will update my progress on my collection here on my blog.

Vogue Japan Angels SS 2013 Spreads

Here are some spreads from the SS 2013 issue of Vogue Japan Angels. This issue is full of kids fashion and kids rooms. I love the photography and the styling! Some of the spreads are so fun too, like the last photo. So creative and cute!

Vogue Japan May 2013 Spreads

Here are some spreads from the Vogue Japan May 2013 issue that I really like. I just love how playful the styling is, especially the mix of patterns and color. I wish I was so bold to wear some of these outfits! I have found the photography in this edition is just beautiful- even the concept of a giant Hello Kitty is just plain awesome!

Aquarian

I started out this painting, Aquarian as a drawing on Fresh Paint and I wanted to play with adding minimal color through hand-drawn patterns and digital patterns. I really like this color palette of neutrals with pops of pastel pink/blue and teal.

Marimekko Fabric Printing Process Video

I am so inspired by designers who really push the boundaries of what their art can be applied to. Marimekko is so awesome at doing this- from home textiles to runway to anything and everything in between, she is a huge inspiration to me. Check out this beautifully-made video of her fabrics being printed. So cool! Makes me want to create more awesome pattern designs!

Vogue Japan May 2013 Issue!

I spent a little time in Little Tokyo today and stopped by a little bookstore called Kinokuniya. They carry a whole bunch of Japanese edition fashion magazines (and other magazines/books), and I couldn't help but pick up this issue of Vogue Japan for May 2013. This issue came with a Vogue Japan Angels S/S 2013 featuring fashion for kids. It also came with a gift: a small zipper pouch from Chloe and a sample of the Centifolia Rose Cream!  Very cool bonus! I love Vogue Japan because of the gorgeous layout, and not to mention the amazing photography. I always find great inspiration for prints, pattern, and color.

Neutral Nest Mood Board/ Design

I am really into the neutral color palette right now, and I saw some cool furniture pieces on Anthropologie. I got inspired and started doodling, the bottom two are some sketchbook pieces in a monochromatic palette.

Zigzag painted nails!

Took me about 7 attempts to get the right index finger correctly....painting the left handed was definitely a challenge, but I was determined to get both hands matching designs. Loving the glitter nail polish right now too!

20's Painting

Still feeling inspired by the 20s era. This is a painting inspired by flappers and Art Deco. I started by designing the background first, then layered the girl on top. I love that I can set the painting to dry on Fresh Paint, so when I paint over the background it doesn't get muddy.

Fresh Paint with Boardwalk Empire

I've been loving the show, Boardwalk Empire. I love the fashion and the design aesthetic during this time period. This painting is a study of the character, Jimmy Darmody played by Michael Pitt.
